Adopt a Family in need in Puerto Rico * Adopte una familia en necesidad en Puerto Rico

After the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, one can not just sit back and not contribute to aid the people of our beloved islands of Puerto Rico, Culebra and Vieques.

This is a grassroots effort to  encourage people, especially those of the diaspora, to consider adopting a family in any way they can to help them recuperate and move forward after the devastating blows to their homes, lives and wellbeing. Let’s all be part of the rebuilding of our families and aid them in whichever way we can to move forward. What a great way to “pay it forward”. We’ll be adding ideas and suggestions for people to do.

Family –  Adopting a family in need from the town of your choice

Cause  or Affinity– Adopting a family in need with a cause or affinity close to you (i.e., autism, cancer, diabetes,  music, pets, art, etc)

School – Adopting a classroom in a school in Puerto Rico, Culebra or Vieques – You choose the grade and town

Despues de la devastación causada por los huracanes Irma y Maria, uno no puede quedarse con los brazos cruzados y no contribuir a la ayuda de nuestra querida gente de Puerto Rico, Culebra y Vieques.

Este es un esfuerzo individual de inspirar a la gente, en especial los de la diaspora, a considerar adoptar una familia en la manera que puedan, para ayudarles a recuperar y mirar hacia el futuro, despues del golpe devastador que han tenido hacia sus hogares, sus vidas y su bienestar. Vamos todos a ser parte de esta reconstruccion familiar y ayudarles en la manera que nos sea posible. Que mejor manera de “pay it forward”. Estaremos colocando mas info y sugerencias pronto.

Voluntourism /Volunturismo

Many people are wondering if they can make it back to Puerto Rico, Culebra and Vieques to “vacation” soon. I read about it a lot in the forums. They may have already booked a trip to the islands, or are considering it. Why not then make the next visit one of Voluntourism?

Voluntourism has been practiced in many countries, and in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, this would be a feasible way to come to the island, have a meaningful experience helping in the recovery process of a town, a family, a school, a church or a sister organization. This could become a special way to help and “pay it forward”, too; while enjoying the natural beauty the island has to offer.

However, considering the difficulties that all the people of Puerto Rico are living thru right now, the people interested in this type of trip must be aware of the scarcity of amenities available. Why not come down and help refurnish a classroom or a home? Maybe you can help cooking for people in need at a shelter? We do not want people who come and rob the people of their dignity at this dire moment in time, we want and need people who can help the people rise and shine once again. Good intentions are not enough. We need volunteers who specialize in a skill that can be put to good use.

Right now, we are witnessing environmental disasters all around the island, we are also facing lack of water, electricity, food and sanitation. Voluntourists could bring their respective expertise and bring a little happiness to others. A Voluntourist, could make a positive and meaningful impact on helping others, as well as growing internally.

This could be an wonderful and different way to spend a vacation. We tend to give monies for charities, for “go fund me causes” and the like, Why not roll up our sleeves and volunteer our skills?

And, while visiting, let’s support the small local businesses, to help boost the local economies.

Mucha gente se está preguntando de cuando podrán volver a Puerto Rico, Culebra o Vieques para “vacacionar”. Veo esto mucho en los foros. A lo mejor ya tenían un viaje planificado, o lo están considerando, Entonces, porque no invertir el proximo viaje en uno de Volunturismo?

El Voluntourismo ha sido practicado en muchos países, y con el advenimiento de Irma y María, sería una manera productiva de venir a la isla, tener una experiencia memorable ayudando en la reconstrucción de un pueblo, una familia, una escuela, una iglesia ó una organización de la cual usted forma parte en otro lugar. Esto puede ser una manera especial de “pay it forward”, mientras se disfruta de la belleza natural que la isla tiene por ofrecer.

No obstante, considerando las dificultades que toda la gente de Puerto Rico está viviendo en estos momentos, las personas interesadas en este tipo de viajes, tienen que estar consientes de todas la escasez de amenidades existentes, ¿Porque no venir y ayudar a arreglar un salón o un hogar? ¿Podrías ayudar cocinando en un refugio? No queremos gente que vienen y roban (o explotan) la dignidad de la gente en estos momentos dificiles, mas bien, queremos personas que vengan a ayudar a la gente levantarse y brillar nuevamente. Las buenas intenciones no son suficientes. Necesitamos voluntarios que se especializan en alguna destreza que puede ser usado para un buen uso.

En estos momentos , estamos experimentando desastres ambientales por toda la isla, además de la escasez de agua, electricidad, comida y salubridad. Los voluntarios podrían traer su “expertise” y traer alegría a otros. Un voluntario podría tener un impacto importante ayudando a otros, además de crecerse interiormente.

Esta podria ser una manera diferente de pasar unas vacaciones. Tendemos a donar dinero para organizaciones sin fines de lucro, para causas tipo “go fund me” y otros. ¿Porque no enrollarnos las manos y contribuir con nuestras destrezas?

Y, mientras estemos visitando, apoyar las empresas pequeñas en la isla para levantar las economias locales.

Faith in our future/Esperanza en nuestro futuro

This is what its all about. These were our “first responders”.

A Pre-kinder group out of Portland, Oregon were the first group to respond in our Adopt a Family PR initiative. I can’t deny I cried. I cried, because it gave me faith in our future generations, in the empathy we can instill in children, in the desire to help others, in the desire to pay it forward. These young children in Pre-K, together with their teacher and parents, wanted to adopt another Pre-K. We matched them up with a Pre-K in Culebra. Here are a few of these children in action, preparing items they are getting ready to send  them.

As we can see, there are many ways to  Adopt a Family. In this instance, adopting a grade.  This picture filled my heart with joy and inspiration, because with these acts of kindness, one family at a time, one school at a time, will be able to have a little bit more of happiness and comfort and be a reminder that they are not forgotten.

De esto es lo que se trata…Estos fueron nuestros “First Responders”

Un grupo de Pre-K de Portland, Oregon, fue el primer grupo en responder a nuestra iniciativa de Adopt a Family PR . No lo puedo negar, lloré. Lloré porque me dió fe y esperanza en nuestras futuras generaciones, en la empatía que podemos transmitir a nuestros niños y niñas, en el deseo de ayudar a otros, en el deseo de “pay it forward”. Estos jovencitos, junto a su maestra y padres, querían adoptar un Pre-K en la isla. Los conectamos con un Pre-K en Culebra. Aquí hay varias de ellas en acción, preparando unos detallitos que le quieren enviar a la escuela.

Como pueden ver, hay diversas maneras de adoptar. En esta instancia, adoptando un grado. Esta foto me acaba de llegar y me llenó de alegría e inspiración, porque son estos actos de bondad, que van llegando, una familia a la vez, una escuela a la vez, que darán un poco mas de alegría y confort a una familia, y le recordará que no estan en el olvido.

Expired articles ~ Articulos expirados

Come on… Put yourself in the place of the survivors of not one but two hurricanes back to back. Would you like to receive expired water, expired food? This is exactly what was delivered to people in Arecibo a few days ago. This water expired in 2014. I think it is sinful and unthoughtful to do something like this. People are in need, but they should be treated with dignity and respect. Shame on those that knowingly send expired articles to people. Yet, I read thru the grapevines today of people saying “the people should be grateful for whatever they get”. I’m sorry, I beg to slightly disagree, can we be grateful for foodstuffs that could hinder even more our health? I don’t think so.  *********************************

Por favor….ponganse en los zapatos de los sobrevivientes de no un huracan sino dos. Te gustaria recibir comida expirada? Agua expirada? Eso fue exactamente lo que fue entregado en el pueblo de Arecibo en dias pasados. Esta agua expiro en 2014. Pienso que es un pecado ademas de una falta de humanidad hacer esto, Las personas estan en necesidad, pero deben ser tratadas con respeto y dignidad. Verguenza les debe dar a los que hacen esto. Sin embargo, lei a traves de las redes sociales hoy que “la gente debe ser agradecida por lo que le den”. Perdonen, pero difiero de esto, podemos estar agradecidos de alimentos y bebidas que ponen aun mas en riesgo la precaria salud? No creo.

Preparing packages with care ~ Preparando paquetes con cuidado

Uh oh! Great intentions are not enough! We want to send families packages, but we must be extremely careful when we pack them. A few suggestions for preparing your packages to aid the people of Puerto Rico:

1- Add extra tape to bottom of box for sturdiness.

2- Line the box with a plastic bag and some paper or bubble wrap on the bottom.

2- Put tape on any bottle opening and place inside a plastic zip lock bag.

3- If sending any glass or plastic bottles, wrap with paper or bubble wrap

4- Accommodate items, just don’t toss them in box. Try to leave few”rattling spaces” within the items.

5- Add bubble  wrap or paper on top.

6- Add extra tape on top.

7- Write on box FRAGILE if any contents are in glass.

Oh! Oh! Las buenas intenciones no son suficientes! Queremos enviar paquetes a nuestras familias, pero tenemos que empacarlas con sumo cuidado. He aqui unas cuantas sugerencias para su envio:

1- Alinee la caja con una bolsa plastic y coloque papel arrugado o “bubble wrap” en el fondo.

2- Colocar tape alrededor de cualquier envase de cristal o plastico.

3- Si envian algo de cristal o plastico, envolver con papel o “bubble wrap”.

4- Acomode los articulos, y no dejar muchos espacios vacios. Rellenen con papel.

5- Coloque mas bubble wrap o papel encima.

6- Colocar tape adicional cuando sellen las cajas.

7-Escribir FRAGIL en la caja si tienen contenidos en cristal.
